FREAKY DEAKY FRIDAY:

“Just Hitting

What the elites don’t want you to know about Mexico

The President of Mexico makes a yearly salary of about $236, 693. The newly elected president of France makes $95, 658, the PM of Canada, $211, 434.

The average salary of Mexican state executives is $125,759—about $10,000 than their U.S. counterparts.

Excluding earnings from oil, Mexico collects taxes equivalent to 9.7% of its Gross Domestic Product, which is about what Haiti collects.

The Mexican elites enjoy inflated life styles; millions of people they represent are short-changed on health benefits, job opportunities and chances to extricate themselves from the poverty to which their country has condemned them.

Well then, what’s wrong with giving these poor suffering souls a chance to make good up north in the U.S.? With all its faults, this nation encourages social mobility and presents many chances for entry-level employment—gardening, sub-contracting, restaurant kitchen work, janitorial services—positions most Americans don’t want to fill.

Besides, these newcomers, illegal or not, want to make good in the New World. Overall, they present great benefits to the economy, and comparatively few problems.

Or do they?

In an article in City Journal, the most enlightening and elegantly edited quarterly in the U.S., Heather Mac Donald points out a few painful facts that Teddy Kennedy, George Bush and other apologists for amnesty are at great pains to ignore.

Social workers in Southern California are having mental melt down over the current epidemic of Latino single parenting, she notes. “Not only has illegitimacy become perfectly acceptable, they say, but so has the resort to welfare and social services to cope with it.”

The rate of childbirth for Mexican teenagers—by far the largest and fastest-growing immigrant population—outpaces every other group. The Mexican teen birthrate is 93 births per every 1,000 girls, compared with 65 for every 1,000 African-American girls, 27 for every 1,000 white girls and 17 for every 1,000 Asian girls.

Who pays for this? You do. And so does everyone else in the overtaxed middle class.

It gets worse. Money alone can’t solve the deeper social difficulties. Most of those babies will be raised in single parent homes. Compared with children from nuclear families, these children will have a far greater risk of school failure. Right now, Hispanics have the highest school dropout in the country—a recipe for poverty for generations to come.

In the Los Angeles Unified School District, which is 73% Hispanic, only 40% of Hispanic students graduate. Advocates for illegal immigration amnesty oppose a high school exit exam. Why? Because it requires students to answer questions testing eighth-grade-level math and ninth-grade-level English. The California Research Bureau predicts that if that exam is ever enacted into law, graduate rates would drop below 30%.

What’s more, school problems inevitably lead to juvenile delinquency and worse. As it is, police are grappling with gangs in L.A. schools. There, the incarceration of Mexican-Americans is 3.45 times higher than that of whites.

Sociologists Alejandro Portes of Princeton and Ruben G. Rumbaut of the University of California, Irvine, followed the children of immigrants in San Diego and Miami from 1992 to 2003—well before the current crisis. They reported that 28% of Mexican-American males between the ages of 18 and 24 had been incarcerated at one time or another, a rate twice that of other immigrant groups.

“Anyone who speaks to Hispanic students in the immigrant-saturated schools of Southern California,” concludes Mac Donald, “will invariably hear the estimate that 50% of a student’s peers have ended up in gangs or other criminal activities.”

What to do about all this?

Stand firm against the present immigration bill, and demand some responsibility and realism from Democrats and Republicans alike. If they’re going to sell out the country they ought to get a better price.

Perhaps Bush and Kennedy should consult Mexico’s leaders. They might start with the slick, smiling figure who presided over so many waves of immigration, exporting as much of his country’s poor as possible—Vicente Fox, an aptly named pol if ever there was one.

One of the United States' foremost critics of Islam believes federal officials should take action to shut down several radical Muslim paramilitary compounds that have sprung up around the country.

Several reports have been published about the suspicious activities in the village of Islamberg in upstate New York. It is reportedly one of about a dozen radical Muslim compounds that have sprung up all over the country. National defense analyst Bob Maginnis says its members are apparently involved in paramilitary activities.

"They are constantly firing. They don't allow outsiders in. They adhere strictly to Islamic law. They are mostly populated with former inmates who had become Islamic [while in prison]. And they carry weapons and they're constantly exploding things on the terrain," says Maginnis.

Robert Spencer, director of Jihad Watch, believes Islamberg and the other compounds need to be shut down.

"Those groups come out of Jamaat ul-Fuqra, which is a very dangerous group in its own right," he explains. "And I'm glad to see recently that with the publicity given to Islamberg that the law enforcement officials are now investigating it. It needs to be investigated and closed down along with the others like it."

Spencer shares the concerns of citizens who live near the compound who cannot understand why the FBI has not already shut Islamberg down.
